Wilderness

Wilderness PilgimageThe Wilderness Pilgrimage is an experience designed to create lasting relationships between older adult men and the boys they will be mentoring. It is a wilderness survival course that both the mentor and the young man will go through together. Many different survival skills will be taught and practiced and each of these skills will have a parallel spiritual lesson. This journey will provide an incredible place for life changing relationships to form through learning, adventure, and extreme challenges.

Mentoring has proven to be a successful strategy for addressing a number of youth problems. A landmark study found that mentored youth were 46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs, skipped school 52% less and decreased lying to their parents by 37%.

This program uses the wilderness as a common ground to form relationships and learn skills that build self-respect, self-reliance and self-awareness. Teaching wilderness survival skills is an incredible way to help people look at the world and their lives with new eyes. Through learning and working together in the program, deeper connections form and lasting relationships are built.

Survival skills taught will include: how to build a primitive fire or shelter, find and purify water, wilderness first aid and CPR, gathering wild edibles, navigation, tracking, hunting and fishing.

No wilderness skills are necessary to be a part of this program. In fact, learning these skills together will be half the fun. We are looking for men with the heart to serve and a desire to adventure together in the wild. The only thing needed is the willingness to be a friend and guide to a young man.

We ask you to prayerfully consider this opportunity to become a mentor. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have about this program. We look forward to seeing where God will lead us together.
